Lightfoot, Joseph Barber
(1828–89)
   Bishop, Historian and Theologian.
   Lightfoot was born in Liverpool, England, and was educated at the University of Cambridge, where he was a student of B.F. westcott. He had a distinguished career as first Hulsean and then Lady Margaret Professor of Divinity. In 1879 he was consecrated Bishop of Durham. Today he is primarily remembered for his New Testament scholarship. He wrote commentaries on St paul’s Epistles to the Galatians, Philippians and Colossians with philemon. In addition, he produced work on Clement of rome and ignatius and he defended the historicity of the Christian religion in nine famous articles in the Contemporary Review.
